Cool deck coatings are soft washed, never blasted
Many North Texas pool decks wear a cooling textured coating, either genuine Kool Deck, which is a cement-based topping, or an acrylic spray texture that homeowners also call cool deck. Both are thin layers bonded to the concrete slab, and high pressure is the fastest way to ruin them. A pressure wand chips and peels the coating, and water forced under an existing chip lifts it from below. Because repairs rarely match the original color, that damage is effectively permanent. Coated decks are cleaned with the soft wash method instead: the cleaning solution kills the algae and dissolves the sunscreen film, and a low-pressure rinse carries it all away. The chemistry does the work, not the water.
Concrete, exposed aggregate, and stamped decks
Broom-finish concrete is the most pressure-tolerant pool deck surface, and it is cleaned with a rotating flat-surface cleaner for an even, stripe-free finish, the same equipment used in driveway and concrete cleaning. Exposed aggregate needs more restraint. Too much pressure or a close, narrow tip can pop the pebbles loose and strip the sealer, so aggregate is cleaned at controlled pressure with wide, even coverage. Stamped concrete carries its color and sealer right at the surface, where aggressive pressure strips the sealer and blotches the color, so it is cleaned at reduced pressure with the right solution and a lighter touch.
Travertine, flagstone, and pavers
Travertine is calcium carbonate, and acidic cleaners etch it permanently, so it is never treated with acids or high pressure. It gets pH-neutral, stone-safe chemistry and a low-pressure rinse. Texas flagstone is usually a soft sandstone that can flake or spall under concentrated pressure, so the technique is adjusted to the condition of each stone. Paver decks are cleaned with joint-safe pressure so the sand that locks the field together stays where it belongs instead of washing into the pool skimmer.
Protecting the pool while the deck is cleaned
Keeping the deck cleaning out of the pool water is half the job. Work proceeds away from the waterline, rinse water is directed to deck drains or landscaping, and detergents and degreasers never go into the pool, where they would foam and add phosphates that feed algae. Surrounding plants are pre-wet and rinsed.
Stains get their own handling. Rust rings from metal furniture legs are mineral stains that chlorine-based cleaners cannot remove, so they take a dedicated spot treatment that is rinsed thoroughly and kept out of the pool entirely. The white, crusty buildup at splash zones and coping is calcium scale, left behind as hard North Texas tap water splashes out and evaporates through the summer heat. And the brown shadows under leaf piles are tannin stains, which respond to the same cleaning chemistry used on the algae.
Timing helps too. DFW oak pollen falls heavily from late March into early May, coating decks in a film that clogs skimmers and feeds mildew, which makes a pre-season cleaning before the pool opens the natural first visit. Shaded or heavily used decks often benefit from a second pass in late summer to clear a season of sunscreen and regrowth.
